An asteroid “Kudritzki”
Our long-time Araucarian Rolf Kudritzki has now his own asteroid, 2012 XN58 “Kudritzki”. The new name of the asteroid was announced in the Bulletin of the Working Group of Small Bodies Nomenclature, Volume 3, #6, 2023, published on behalf of the International Astronomical Union.
Rolf-Peter Kudritzki (b. 1945) is a German astronomer who studies extragalactic stellar spectroscopy. Kudritzki obtained his PhD at the Technical University of Berlin (1973) and was Director of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Munich (1982–2000) and Director of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy (2000–2010).
The asteroid was discovered on May 30, 2011, by Pan-STARRS 1.
